Preston Spencer, owner of HCBS (Heartwood Construction and Building Solutions), graduated from Appalachian State University in 2008 with a BS in Building Science & Construction Management, and a minor in Business Administration. Getting an early start in the construction business has made all the difference for Preston. From working construction during his summers in high school and college, to completing an internship with a large production builder in the high country, to working as Construction Manager for a prominent custom home builder, Preston has gained a great deal of quality construction and management experience over the past 10 years. Now in 2010, Preston has obtained his NC General Contractors license, so HCBS has an even greater capacity to work with our customers to provide the service they need.
The greatest truth that he has come to discover during his experience working for other builders is that customers don't just want a good price...they want the highest level of quality, service and attention to detail at that same good price. In January of 2009, Preston decided he could provide that quality for homeowners, and do it better than his competitors. Thus, HCBS was born.
What's in a Name?

Heartwood is the portion of wood at the core of a tree. It is harder, more dense, resistant to decay, and considered by many to be the best quality wood from most trees. Much like the heartwood of a tree, quality is at the core of what we do at HCBS. That is also why we say that "Quality is a matter of the heart." We truly feel that quality construction is not just something we do, it's part of who we are, and something we believe in.
